 Chlorine has become one of the most known uses for water sanitation.  

If you have grown up with tubs & spas, the smell of chlorine is something very familiar. While this may be a common experience, chlorine is classified as an expensive pesticide and one that we may want to reconsider using in our 

Tub and Spa experience.

 When chlorine is used in the Hot Tub or Spa, it combines with contaminants like bacteria, urine, feces, body oils, etc., we say "chlorine is doing its job" but, this interaction creates a reaction in molecules resulting in 'chloramines', also known as combined chlorine. Most commonly, chloramines are the root cause of problems associated with skin, eye, sinus, and respiratory issues. Chloramines can affect those in and around the pool, especially those with asthma. In order to allow the chlorine to maintain itself against UV light, chemicals such as Cyanuric Acid (CYA) are added (Stabilizers or Conditioners) to prevent degradation. CYA does not escape the pool water in the same manner and, as a result, accumulates over time diminishing the overall effects of chlorine and, therefore, demanding increases in chlorine and other chemicals to achieve acceptable sanitation. This creates the haziness often seen in the water called turbidity.  

Is this really the healthiest form of tubbing?

The CDC recommends limiting exposure to chloramines. Chloramine exposure has been linked to cancers and disease. Labeling for pool chemicals always reads  "Keep out of reach of children."
